What is Vision?
Vision is response to light. Its purpose is to take in information with our eyes and to guide and direct our behavior. It is a process that involves eyes, brain, nervous system and muscles.
Sight is seeing clearly (20/20). At a typical school screening or pediatrician visit sight is tested at distance (20 ft.). However, most learning in school takes place at near where visual skills in addition to seeing clearly are essential. Conservative estimates have indicated that at least 80% of what we learn comes through our visual system. Vision is what allows for learning, self-esteem and success in our society.
Vision enables one to:
- Maintain one’s place when reading (or filling in a Scantron form)
- Understand and derive meaning from that which one has seen or read. Sustain attention to tasks
- Be able to kick a soccer ball, or hit a baseball/tennis ball, or catch a football
- Be able to park a car (without using your bumper)
- Be able to give directions to somebody else to get to your home
