What is Vision?
Vision is the psycho-physiological process by which we take in information with our eyes, interpret it on a conscious and subconscious level, and then interact with our environment based upon the processing of the visual input.
Sight is seeing clearly (20/20). At a typical school screening or pediatrician visit sight is tested at distance (20 ft.). However, most learning in school takes place at near where visual skills in addition to seeing clearly are essential. Conservative estimates have indicated that no less than 80% of what we learn comes through our visual system. Vision is what allows for learning, self-esteem and success in our society.
Vision involves:
- Maintaining one’s place when reading (or filling in a Scantron form)
- Understanding and deriving meaning from what you have seen or read
Being able to sustain attention to tasks
- Being able to kick a soccer ball, or hit a baseball/tennis ball, or catch a football
- Being able to park a car (without using your bumper)
- Being able to give directions to somebody else to get to your home
